A City Girl Moves to Iowa. By Miss Mia

On my "Gotcha Day" Tuesday morning March 31 right away Mona, my foster sis and I knew something was up.

But we got some play time in anyway.

And we did some posing for the camera - Mona you are a ham!

Did I ever mention that I have my very own monkey crate? Apparently real monkees used it before me, I would have liked to have met them. (Susan says my monkey crate is the reason my blog is not called Mia's Diary of Destruction...)

Finally we hit the road. It was kind of a tight fit in the back of the car with all of my stuff.

I just knew great things were up ahead so I sat up for part of the trip to get a better look.

Ah, Iowa smells really good...I am now sitting on Susan's lap for a better view. Can you see who is sitting on the floor by Susan's feet?

Yep, its Millie, my sister who came along for the ride to make sure she approved of my new home...she only believes in traveling on the floor in the front seat - I think she misses a lot of stuff down there but it makes her happy. Did you notice my spiffy new collar? I have a matching new leash too!

In case you were wondering , this is what Iowa looks like. When we left Chicago it was raining hard but as we drove through Iowa the sun came out just for us!

I see houses! Are we almost there yet? Finally, we pull up in a very nice driveway, Millie and I could hardly contain ourselves so we went to check out the back yard first.

Oh boy, do I like my new backyard, and I think I am going to like the neighbors too!

Next we went in the house for a look see...this is the lovely kitchen where cookies are dispensed. Hey new Mom are you seeing my perfect sit stay?

Millie tried out the couch for me and decided she liked it a lot.

I am liking my new living room - I have a great veiw of my awesome backyard. Yep, I can get used to this set up.

Hey, was that a squirrel, or a bird or a bunny in my backyard? I better keep a look out!

Next my new Mom took me on a walk in the neighborhood - there were dogs checking us out from their windows and barking hello, lots of great smells, some kids and a big park just a block away. I am going to be one busy dog!

The walk was great...but do you know what the best part was? Coming home. They even put a sign out for me...and it has a picture of my new Dad on it!

Hey, new Dad is home. Hey new Dad what's in the bag? Anything for me?

I remember you too...how about some kisses?

Not only did I get kisses from my new Dad, but he gave me a massage so I wouldn't worry too much when Aunt Kira and Aunt Susan said goodbye and headed back to Chicago.

I am a very happy and very, very lucky girl to have so many people that love me so much. I love my new home and my new Mom and Dad and I am gonna do my best to be a good girl and make everyone very proud of me. I will be sure to keep you all updated on my adventures in Iowa.

Daily Affirmations

Mia's foster Mom Laura said she caught Mia staring at herself in the hall mirror for a full five minutes - and she suspects Mia was doing her daily affirmations:

"I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it people like me!"

Last weekend was rainy and a bit chilly but we headed out anyway for an adventure. We started with a nap in the car and then ended up at the lake.

Mia LOVES the seagulls, she loves the live ones who provide hours of enjoyment from the car window and the ones who did not make it thru the long cold winter...she especially liked rolling in that one.

The rain stopped for about 30 minutes and the sun came out so we headed out to see what we could see and find some cool spots to pose...maybe it was too cool... we did not have a sweater with us!

Even though she was chilly Mia shows off her perfect sit stay.

Mia can spot a seagull, a squirrell, a stranger, or a piece of paper blowing in the wind from miles away.

All good walks by the lake must come to an end for 'stinky' girls and bathies must be endured - Mia was such a trooper especially since Soggy Paws only had cold water!

Good thing we had extra blankies in the car for snuggling.

This was Mia's very favorite part of the day.

A day in the life of a silly dog named Mia

When I wake up in the morning I love to stretch and scratch my back against the wall. My foster Dad says I look like a bear rubbing against a tree. Maybe I am part bear, because I do love to rub up and down the wooden fence in the back yard too!My first order of the day is to head downstairs and make sure the pantry is still stocked with food and treats. My foster mom says I’m not supposed to go in there and help myself. Sometimes I get caught and have to run out of the pantry really fast before she sees me!

My bowl is empty! Is it time for breakfast YET???

My foster sisters, Mona and Maggie, eat breakfast after I do. I’m not allowed to go into the kitchen while they’re eating, so my foster mom makes me wait outside the door. Life is so cruel.

After breakfast, it’s time to get down to business. These things won’t de-stuff themselves!

Ahhhhhh…. a productive day at work. Time for a break.

Sometimes I get some help from my foster sister Mona. She’s pretty good at this job too.

My foster sister Maggie, on the other hand, thinks it’s the most boring job EVER.

What’s next on the agenda?

Time for a little break outside. On my way down the back porch, I stop at the recycling bin for a quick sniff. You can’t imagine what these humans throw out.

Today I found a perfectly good can with food molecules still attached! What’s wrong with them?

After a hard day of work, it’s time for some play with my foster sister Mona. We play pretty rough sometimes! My foster mom says we are like two elk fighting in the forest.

We can wrestle like this for hours! Later on we wrestle some more in the beautiful snowfall.

We even wrestle in the bedroom…

... until we just… don’t… have… any… energy… left. Whewwwww!!! That’s okay though, because it’s time for bed anyway. It’s been a long productive day. *yawn* Good night!

The Waiting IsThe Hardest Part...

Hello Dear Readers, I want to thank you all for your support in helping me find a new home. We haven't found it yet but I am staying hopeful that it will happen soon.

I try to stay alert when we are driving just in case my new family passes by I can stop them and let them know I am here - and I am ready to go and start my new life.

Sometimes I get kind of tired from all that searching and I have to take a little break.

Sometimes I have to take a good long nap so I can be ready for when my new family finds me.

I try to keep my mind occupied but usually a nap is the only thing that makes me feel better.

Sometimes it makes me sad that I have not found my new family yet...I know they are out there...I kind of thought they would have found me by now...

Let me know if you see them - and please let them know where to find me...I'll just go and play some more with my foster sister Mona and try to stay hopeful... thanks for stopping by!

Mia is Spotlighted by HSUS

Last night was an exciting night for all of us!

Thanks to our friends Barb, Gwen and Sandy, Miss Mia was chosen to be featured at the HSUS 2009 Spotlight Humane Chicago to combat dog fighting. She was one of six adoptable pitties featured on the big screens throughout the night. In this picture she is posing with Cook County Sherrif Tom Dart who received recognition for his work to end dog fighting in Cook County.

In the lobby in the midst of the silent auction items there were two really nice posters with all six of the adoptable dogs on them - Mia looked great in her Petraits picture (thanks again Sheri Berliner) at the very top of the poster.

There were five other doggies featured from Orphans of the Storm http://www.orphansofthestorm.org/ and the Bombshell Bullies Pit Bull Rescue http://www.adoptapet.com/adoption_rescue/75446.html

Some of these guys have been in a shelter their whole lives - one is 10 years old - I hope all of them get the attention they deserve and find their forever homes.

Yeah!...we are going to go visit my friend Sharyn!!
But first there is a long drive from the tennis courts where I just met my foster folks to Sharyn's house. I love car rides.

Sometimes Susan stops the car and I have to wait for her...I am good at looking pretty in the car.

Sometime she is distracted by how pretty I am...today she noticed the little bit of white on my tail end.

Finally we got to Sharyn and Justin's house...I was a perfect girl when I met Justin for the first time...here I am showing him my best sit.

Then he gave me scritches behind my ears...my favorite!

Then I got some more scritches from Sharyn.

Afterwards I got a great big meal bone for the ride home. It was a good day.

Meeting the Fosters

I thought we should go back a bit and let everyone enjoy the details of how Mia found her wonderful foster parents...thanks to professional photographer Sheri Berliner (www.petraits.com) Laura and Mike received an email about Mia needing to find a foster home immediately, they responded right away and we set up a meet and greet. We met at a tennis court on a rainy Sunday, the first thing that Mia did was to begin to remove her clothing...while pretending to sniff around...coat...what coat?

Then she took a minute to snicker about her crafty coat removing skills...

The sniff and greet went really well when she met Laura and Mike.

The fact that Laura (who is a dog trainer) brings her own treat pouch was a plus!

Wow! That treat dispenser thing is attached to you!

I like you foster momma!

After some more fun on the tennis court, (including fencing with a loose dog in the park- I am happy to report Mia quickly decided not to continue that when we all suggested she knock it off) we thanked Laura and Mike and headed back to the car for the next part of our day.

Mia slept very well after that.

Holding Pattern

Hello Everyone! Mia here hanging in my foster home - boy is it nice here! Plenty of comfy dog beds, good food, snacks, lots of walks and plenty of toys! Best of all my foster Mom and Dad really love me and they let me kiss and snuggle and sit in their lap whenever I want. And I am learning to be a very good dog. Only casualty has been my collar - but in my defense I was trying to get to the treats and found my collar instead....and my foster Mom got me a new collar right away. Thanks foster Mom!

Like I said - plenty of toys - well a lot of them belong to my foster sisters but they are good about sharing! Lucky me!

After checking out of the boarding facility today, but before she went to her new foster home - Mia stopped by Yvette's house (or Dundee Boy's home, depends how you look at it). Above is a picture of Mia running around the totally fenced yard - she had a small episode of the zoomies, we hope to upload a video soon!

UPDATE: Mia is sleeping in a home (a very nice home with very, very nice people) tonight for the first time in two and a half months. God Bless everyone who helped her get this far. Pics will be posted tomorrow. Her roomie dogs are not thrilled with the addition and she was not nearly as polite as she should have been when she met them but everyone has their own space at her new "home" and I am sure she will sleep very well tonight.

Spiffin up at the Spa for the New Year

When we arrived at Soggy Paws in the South Loop, Mia wasn't too sure she was going to enjoy this experience - there were a few dogs barking and big tubs everywhere. But by the time Ellie (fantastic staffer) helped Mia and I get situated she was begining to relax.
First came a good smelling face wash with her own washcloth and then the shampoo, a whole bottle just for Mia. Mia thought the sudsy part was kind of fun
but the butt scritches were the best part.

After a few rinses, it was time for the towel dry and towel modeling...

Blue is definitely Mia's color - don't you think?

She could have been a silent film star.

The obligatory reindeer antlers were not her favorite part of the day.

But her new friend (Soggy Paws staffer) Ellie was definitely a favorite of Mia's.

Thanks Soggy Paws (Kevin and Ellie) for a great spa day for Mia, it was just the pampering she needed to ease the tension of the boarding life and just the boost she needed to get ready for her exciting new year.

Mia knows this year is going to be great - with only 11 days to go to find a new home (or foster home) before she has to leave the boarding facility, she knows her friends and fans are working tirelessly passing along her story, her flyer, her pictures and her website to find a place for her to safely land on January 12.

Mia is feeling a little sad about the past year but she is confident that the New Year will bring a new best friend to love, a new home, maybe a few new toys and lots of good times and kisses. She thanks everyone for their help on her behalf.

T-13 days and counting until Mia needs to be out of her boarding facility. We have had several email inquiries and are keeping our fingers crossed that a forever home or at least a foster home are right around the corner. Two Weeks to Find a Home

We just found out that we have two weeks to find Mia a home or a foster home, she is no longer able to stay at the boarding facility where she has been since October. Her behavior is deteriorating there, from boredom and anxiety and probably depression and the bill is really mounting. We now owe $1700.

If everyone can pass along Mia's website and blog to everyone they know, we will find her a place. And donations are very welcome too!

While Mia enjoys napping in my car during our weekly outings, she would prefer not to live in my car!

The Blue Coat

Being a Celebrity

Mia has become a bit of a celebrity, people from all over the country are finding out about her and her search for a good home. These are some things Mia has learned about being a celebrity in case you are thinking of becoming one:

Celebrity dogs have to look good in clothes...and they have to be ready to pose at any second for photos...the paparazzi are everywhere....

Celebrity dogs have to keep their eyes on the treats and focus all of their attention on getting all of the treats that they deserve. Sometimes tricks like sitting, shaking paw and spinning like a princess are required so you must practise...a lot.

Luckily celebrities get to take long naps in the car when they are being chauffered home.

Its tough being famous...

Soon it will be Chistmas Day.

Mia was a perfect angel for our outing on Montrose Ave. She did some window shopping, posed for pictures, sniffed eveyone who passed us and only once tried to chase a suitcase on wheels - who can blame her? It was cold but fun and the white peppermint hot chocolate from Starbucks was the best! Don't worry Mia got extra snacks when we made it back to the car. And she enjoyed an extra long nap before heading home - she is a snuggle bug.

Mia sure is hoping for a foster home or even better a forever home for Christmas.

Erica

In September of 2005 Erica signed up to be a volunteer at a local no kill shelter in Chicago. When I met her and she told me she wanted to be a humane educator I thought I was the luckiest person in the world. You see Erica was an elementary school teacher, she taught in the Chicago Public Schools, she was fearless, and she spoke Spanish, she loved kids and she had more energy than all of us put together and she was ready and willing to do whatever needed to be done.
So we put her to work.

For the Community Outreach program she was a humane education presenter for hundreds of presentations, for kids and adults and everyone in between, she did live presentations and cable TV and CBS, she could handle any audience and always knew her facts and was so charming and bubbly and enthusiastic how could you not learn and "get it" and go home and call right away to make a spay neuter appointment or decide to take better care of your pet?

Her students got involved too, every Friday if they had finished their work and were very good they got a reward...they were allowed to do shelter work, making book marks and Bite Books and stuffing bags of information for our events and they loved it and they loved Erica.

She taught them about unconditional love and how great it is to love an animal and why we needed to take care of them, to speak up for them and protect them. Her students got involved with Dogs Deserve Better and came up with great posters and essays for Spay Day USA and toured the clinic more than once. Erica educated them and turned them into animal activists and made them feel important.

Erica also was an adoption counselor and a location manager, she worked at the front desk of the clinic and took over for our volunteer coordinator when we were in between staff members, she did offsite adoption events and volunteered at the Adoption Center and for the past year she worked part time helping our Development department.

She was a good friend and a great volunteer, she loved animals and was always willing to go the extra mile for them. She was also very kind to people and made you feel like she knew you really well right away, she was always bubbling over with energy and drive and she accomplished more than most of us do in a lifetime. She was also carefree and liked to take risks and could not be persauded once she made up her mind no matter how hard you tried. She would just laugh and go right on doing what she wanted to do.

She loved Millie and Mia fiercely and would do anything for them no matter what challenges they presented. Millie was ashelter adoptee and Erica's first dog, Mia came later off the streets of Little Village. Erica found her hungry and scared as a puppy, she took her right home and was her staunchest supporter.

I don't know why Erica was only with us for a short time but I do know she left behind hundreds probably thousands of people she has touched and influenced, people who are a little bit better because of her. And I know that it is our duty to carry on where she left off, to continue to teach and gently persuade and defend and staunchly support those who do not have a voice or those who have been judged soley by their breed.

Erica loved unconditionally and that is the gift she gave all of us as well as a reminder that

"now is the time" because life is short.

The very first picture is of Millie at Erica's memorial service, it was the end of the evening and people were starting to leave, Millie walked over and layed down under the table that held candles and pictures of her Mom.

This week we traveled up North to visit our friend Sharyn. We had some lunch, took a walk, had some cookies and tried to stay warm.

Mia's favorite parts were the cookies and the nap she enjoyed on the way home.

Here are her impressions of the day:

Its good to have friends.

Friends ask you to sit and then give you cookies...even in the snow.

Friends pose for pictures with you.

Sometimes friends are a little slow with the cookies and you have to help them.

Friends give you kisses.

Friends put silly hats on your head and laugh.

Friends play with your ears and laugh some more.

But then friends scritch you behind the ears and that feels good.

Yup. Its good to have friends.

More Fun in the Forest

On our next outing we went back to the forest preserve in Willow Springs, we are regulars now and have this hiking thing down. We love hiking in the woods! Mia is not very good at keeping track of her coats so here she is in another fashionable all weather coat.

If you look very closely or if you can zoom in on this picture you will see a a very large deer in the middle of the path at the top of the photo - Mia alerted us to this fact way before we ever saw her. The doe stayed in the middle of the path until we got very close and then ran into the woods. Mia just sniffed the path and kept going to the next good smell.

This week we went back to the forest preserve but took a different path and enjoyed a two hour hike. Good thing Millie knows how to find the car - no matter where we are...

A great time was had by all but especially Mia because she was surrounded by a few of her favorite things:

Mia and Millie Go To the Forest Preserve

For our second weekly outing with Mia and Millie we decided we needed to commune with nature and get some exercise, we chose the nearest forest preserve and headed out prepared with sweaters, gloves, treats and hot chocolate. First Mia and her sister Millie posed in their new sweaters perfect for a fall afternoon in the woods. Being very good models they made sure to pose in front of very pretty scenery in the sunlinght. Then everyone enjoyed a very long hike along the trails. Mia wanted to smell everything and had a blast, she is very attentive and knew whenever there was a person or an animal nearby - but her favorite part was the horse manure she found. Millie was in the lead for the entire walk, "let's keep going people!" and was very helpful in finding the car.

It was another very good day.

Week One. Since Erica passed Millie has been hanging with her Auntie Kira and Mia has been boarding at K9 University. We wanted to be able to spend some time with Mia and allow her to spend some time with her sister Millie. Three of us, all friends of Erica, have Mondays off so we decided to plan an outing. It was a beautiful day so we decided to pick up the girls and head to the lake at 31st street - lots of parking and not as much commotion as the northside.

Mia and Aga and I got there first and hung out waiting for Millie and Sharyn. Several kids were playing along the lakefront and were very interested in Mia, she was relaxed and curious and very well-behaved.

Sharyn brought Millie and they had a happy reunion. Sharyn thought to bring long leashes and we headed off walking the lakefront in the sun. The girls had a glorious time smelling and rolling in the goose poop. We had a good time trying to keep them from becoming a tangled mess.

Several times Mia would look back at us and stop and we realized that she wanted to stop and have some loving. So we braved the goose poop infested grass and just relaxed. Well, we relaxed. Mia's sister Millie is a "lets get this walk done" kind of girl so we soon headed back to the cars.

Next stop was for ice cream at Scoops in Bridgeport. Everyone had a cone, including Mia who swallowed hers almost whole, and since Millie only wanted a few licks Mia finished hers off as well. Passersby enjoyed watching the girls enjoy their cones. Both were well behaved with people passing by, even a whole class of very young children in uniform with their teachers.

Last stop we dropped off Mia at her digs at K9 University with a care package of Dingo bones, a new bed and some new food. We kissed her good bye and told her we would see her next week. It was a good day.

Mia - Adventure 1

Every Monday a few friends of Mia take her out for an adventure - these adventures always include a reunion with her sister Millie who now lives with her Auntie Kira, as well as good food and fun.

Week one included a walk along the lake at 31st Street and an ice cream cone in Bridgeport.
